Five Storied Pagoda

The finial (相輪 sōrin) has several parts each of
which is a Buddhist symbol, including a water flame (水煙
suien), nine rings (九輪 kyurin), an 8-petaled open
Lotus blossom (請け花 ukebana), etc. Compare
to the modern sourin on the lodging temple.
Sign describing the history of the Five Storied Pagoda ("五" = 5,
"重" = layer, "塔" = tower). The beginning part, on the
right, mentions the 25th, 26th, 27th, 30th and 31st high
priests (上人 is shōnin); it was completed in the
6th month of 1749 (寛延二年六月). In 1966 (昭和四十一年), the pagoda was designated a national cultural treasure of Japan.
